Salva Dut, President of Water for Sudan, Inc. (waterforsudan.org) They have been drinning wells for several years and have moved their entire equipment farther south for safekeeping. They are trying to drill as many wells as they can in the newly created country, South Sudan. While in Rochester, NY the equipment is stored in a guarded compound. The FGCNYS had contributed to the building of more than 60 wells. Some well caps are inscribed with the words, Federated Garden Clubs of NYS, Guilderland, NY. Linda Sue Park, a Newberry medalist has written a book, "A Long Walk to Water". It is a true account of Salva's story juxtaposed with the story of a yound girl in Sudan who walks each day to collect water. It is geared for readers 10 years or older.Contact Lucy Bauer, World Gardening Chairman to contribute: lucybauer@verizon.net

This year the Nature Conservancy has suggested we assist them in an educational way. They have a unique preserve located near ithaca, the O.D. Von Engeln Preserve in Malloryville. It features a great diversity of plants and wildlife due to the variety of habitats made possible by the glacier 10,000 years ago. Sadly their most basic signs are in desperate need of replacement due to the materials used at the time of the original installation that were not fo the quality available today.
What is needed is signage that would provide infomation enabling visitors to fully appreciate their expertise and hopefully take home the message of the need for land conservation and preservaiton.
This request is to be used where the need is greatest as determined by Gregg Sargis, the Chapters Programs Stewardship Ecologist, with recognition on each sign-donated by the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State. Please mail your club or individual contribution to Chairman Erna Gundlach, 15 River Park Drive, New Paltz, NY 12561 made out to FGCNYS, Inc.
